The Faculty of Special Education, Ho Chi Minh City National College of Education

The Faculty was found in 19 June 2003 with the purpose of training special education teachers, who may work with children with special needs at the age of 0 - 6 in Southern provinces of Vietnam. We would like to introduce some useful information of our Faculty in terms of lectures, students, courses and training curriculum.

One of important factors to maintain activities of the Faculty is to deliver lectures. Until now, we have had 11 lecturers and an administrator. The lecturers who owned different qualification of Special Education have been training. There are three groups of lecturers who are working in different fields.  Firstly, the group for Education of Visually impaired children including 05 lecturers (A lecturer got PhD. degree in Education and Psychology, 02 lecturers got MA. and 02 got BA. degree of Special Education with specialized of children with visually impairments. Secondly, there are three lecturers in the group for Education of children with intellectual disabilities with two Master degrees of Educational Management and one BA. in Special Education. Finally, there are 03 lecturers of the group for Education of children with hearing impairment including 01 MSc. in Human Communication Sciences and 02 lecturers got MA in Psychology and Early Childhood Education. The Faculty has been working closely with other faculties of Special Education in Vietnam and different organizations to train students and conduct research studies or projects.

With respect to students and courses, so far, we had been training approximately 1000 teachers who can work with children and parents of children with disabilities in special schools/ centres, inclusive classes, and children hospitals. Students are able to attend the exam entrance to study with two kinds of training: full times (formal training at week days) and part-time (informal training at weekends). Students have to study and finish the course lasting three years. Mainly, they concentrate on studying how to teach 3 types of children with disabilities and they have also been trained how to work with children with Autism and other types of children with special needs. In the future, we will possibly adjust our curriculum so that students can study effectively and can help children with disabilities to include in our society.

In short, we just only introduce brief information of the Faculty of Special Education. We hope that, the Faculty will be developed about the quantity of students but more importantly this is the quality of teaching and learning for both lecturers and students.
